Religious Studies

Religious studies is an academic discipline which is studied a several different levels. In the UK religious studies is compulsory for children up to GCSE age when the subject becomes optional. Many children will continue to study religious studies through their GCSEs and A levels and most universities around the country offer their prospective students the opportunity to read religious studies at an undergraduate level.

There are many different facets to religious studies and people who read the subject at an undergraduate level may find themselves taking modules in the history of religion, philosophy of religion and the sociology of religion. Although this can vary greatly as different institutions will adopt very different approaches to how they teach religious studies and the material that they cover.

Religious studies will cover a wide range of topics concerning different religions from all over the world. A typical religious studies course will look at several religions in depth often drawing comparisons between them.

It is important not to confuse religious studies and theology. Whilst the two cover similar topics religious studies takes a purely academic approach to the material, whilst somebody who considers themselves to be a theologian will most likely be a believer in the religion that they are studying. It is possible to approach religious studies from an entirely secular perspective, although that is not to say all people involved in religious studies are non believers.
